Left Behind North of the Border is a project funded by the Political Studies Association (PSA) and coordinated by Dr James Morrison, a lecturer and researcher at Robert Gordon University, Aberdeen, who specializes in media and political narratives about poverty and exclusion. Since starting the project in January 2021, James has interviewed adults from a range of cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds who are united by their common experience of financial hardship, cuts to services and the complexity and inequities of the benefits system. Many have also been affected by other forms of inequality, disadvantage and stigma – including those relating to race, ethnicity, disability, gender and sexuality. The project has also benefited from the expertise and support of charities and third-sector collaborators including the Poverty Alliance, Inclusion Scotland and the Black Triangle Campaign for disability rights.
